Spam Blocker 101

A can of chopped pork shoulder meat with ham meat added, salt, water, sugar, and sodium nitrite for colorSpam Blocker is a program developed by and used here on the Wilkshire.net Mail Servers that analyzes each individual email message sent to each individual Wilkshire.net email account or customer. It's sole purpose is to block unwanted, unsolicited JUNK email. Spam Blocker is totally customizable and can be configured by each Wilkshire.net subscriber to fit their needs. It's a useful tool and everybody should understand how it works.

You can configure your individual email account's Spam Blocker setting by clicking on this link. http://spam.wilkshire.net. Once there login with you email username and password.

Once inside the Spam Blocker program you will be at your Spam Inbox. These are the messages that the Wilkshire.net Mail Servers have flagged as SPAM or Junk Mail. If you find a message that you deem legitimate and you want to receive that specific message... click on the message subject and it will open the message. From there click on "Click Here To Move This Message To Your Mail Mailbox". Then the next time you check your email, that message will be downloaded with your legitimate Wilkshire.net email account. Messages marked as SPAM reside in your SPAM inbox for a period of 96 hours (4 days), after that they are permanently deleted.

If you have a sender who's email to you is consistently being listed as SPAM and it's legitimate to you, don't worry... just add the sender's email address to your APPROVED SENDERS LIST. You can do this by clicking on the "SETTINGS" link in the upper right hand corner of the Spam Blocker Interface. From there you have 3 options to choose from...

1. "CURRENT SPAM LEVEL"
2. "APPROVED SENDERS LIST"
3. "BLOCKED SENDERS LIST"

Just click on "CHANGE" in the APPROVED SENDERS LIST box and that will take you to a page where you type in the person's specific email address in full and then click on the "ADD TO APPROVED SENDER'S LIST" button at the bottom of the page. This will add that person to an allow list and their email to you will NEVER be blocked again unless they send from a different email address that is not specified as being "ALLOWED" by you.

The same applies to the BLOCKED SENDERS LIST. Follow the same instruction listed above, but know that adding them to the BLOCKED SENDERS LIST will not allow or will deny them the opportunity to send email to your inbox. Messages sent from that user's email address that you specify will automatically go to your SPAM inbox. If they would send you a message you want to receive you would have to retrieve it from your SPAM inbox as mentioned 3 paragraphs ago. You can also remove them from your BLOCKED SENDERS LIST by check marking their email address and then clicking on the "DELETE" button at the bottom to remove them.

The SPAM LEVEL SETTING is the MOST IMPORTANT SETTING within your Spam Blocker Controls. This setting dictates the "score" that your account measures what is listed as SPAM and what is sent to you as legitimate email in your regular inbox. The default level set by Wilkshire is "3". Set it lower and more SPAM will be caught, but (HERE IS THE IMPORTANT POINT) more legit email could be intercepted as SPAM and you won't get it unless you retrieve it from your SPAM inbox. Set it higher than "3" and more SPAM will be allowed through, but the lesser the chance of somebody's important email being blocked. A setting of 200 will effectively render your email inbox "wide open" and allow you to receive every piece of email sent to you whether you want it or not. All you have to do is click on "CHANGE" and choose your value or number!

You can also change the frequency or time frame in which our Spam server emails you your Spam Blocker Report. By default the report is sent every 12 hours, but sometimes so much junk has been sent to you that it could be pretty lengthy by the time you receive it. If that is the case maybe have it sent every 6 hours instead of 12. you could also set it the other way... if you hardly receive any junk email (you're lucky!) then set the report frequency to 24 or 48 hours...

Some important tips and thoughts...

As SPAMMERS increase their technology and techniques that they use to send SPAM or JUNK MAIL, our system will become more sophisticated because the programmers that write the code we use to catch it will update our software as well. So if you have a setting now of "5" (Which is lower than what Wilkshire recommends since we default your setting to "8") then remember after we do a Spam Blocker Database Update then that "5" might be a little tighter control than what the old "5" setting was. So evaluate your settings as needed and check the Spam Blocker Report message our server sends to your inbox every 12 (by default) hours to ensure that legit email is NOT being blocked. If you have important friends or family members that send you email... take the time and add their email address to your ALLOWED SENDERS LIST regardless and their email will ALWAYS get through. If you add someone to the BLOCKED SENDERS LIST... do so with caution because you'll never get their email again unless you DELETE them from that blocked senders list.

We hope you have found this informative. Understanding how to ensure you email is working to your liking is very important to us. Please keep in mind that our servers analyze around a half million sent email messages a day! We are one of the few ISPs that actually allow users to customize their specific email settings themselves and to their liking. If an important message is blocked unknowingly or accidentally, we're sorry about that and obviously it's not our intent to cause problems for our customers. Wilkshire.net Spam Blocker is probably one of the BEST things we've ever done here and we intend to keep it in place and keep it up to date until the powers that be decide to crack down and eliminate the jerks that send unsolicited SPAM JUNK EMAIL. Thank you for your support and business! Have a great day!
